Chile is looking at a partnership with its wine-producing counterparts in Australia's Barossa Valley, according to local reports.

Chile's Foreign Minister has made a visit to the region to discuss joint efforts to sell wine to Asia, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation said today (20 November).

Australian MP Ivan Venning told the ABC that though he had initial reservations about an Australian region teaming up with a rival from the New World, he had decided that cooperation was worth pursuing.

"I was initially quite cautious because why would you want to do a deal with an international competitor, as Chile is with us, in the world of wine," Venning said.

"But I think the Australian wine, particularly our Barossa wines and the Chilean wines do complement each other because they don't have the premium reds like we have. They have a lot of whites, quite different whites to us and if we don't do this partnership others will."
