Chateau St. Jean Winery has announced the creation of a new tier of California appellation wines to be released in the US next month. The Sonoma Valley-based winery has produced a California Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon which will be available both in the on-premise and off-premise channels.

"We've been listening to our customers and heard what they were asking for - basically a 'no special occasion' wine priced at a place that is comfortable for the wallet but has the Chateau St. Jean signature," winemaker Margo Van Staaveren said in a statement. "The great majority of our customers drink our Chateau St. Jean Sonoma County Chardonnay, and we realised we were leaving them short by not offering a couple of red wines at the same price point."

The wines will be priced at US$14.99 each.
