Worldwide Champagne sales rose by 18.7% in volume during the first quarter of 2011, continuing the run of quarterly increases that began in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Export volumes reached 25.3m in the three months to the end of March said trade body the Comité Interprofessionnel des Vins de Champagne (CIVC).

Volume sales to EU and non-EU countries were up 11.3% and 28.5% respectively, it said today (24 May). Sales in France increased by 5.1%.

Figures are not yet available for exports to individual countries, the CIVC said. In 2010,  global Champagne sales bounced back to 319.5m bottles, the fourth highest total on record.
