According to shipment figures released today by trade association Comité Champagne, exports spearheaded the growth, moving up by 6.6% in value on a 3.4% volumes rise. The domestic market, however, was flat in value terms - dipping 0.4% - as volumes fell 2.5%.

Domestic and export shipments were almost identical as a result, reaching 153.8m bottles and 153.5m bottles, respectively.

While the leading US market enjoyed a strong year, moving up 8.5% to EUR585.8m and 5.9% to 23.1m bottles, the UK was impacted by what Comité Champagne dubbed "the Brexit effect", falling 11% to 27.8m bottles and 5.7% to EUR415.2m.

Japan consolidated its third ranking in export terms, with strong growth in value - +21.3% to EUR306.7m - and volumes - +17.6% to 12.9m bottles.

Germany in fourth recorded a slight rise in value terms, but volumes fell marginally, while fifth-largest export market Italy performed well, with volumes up 11%.

Elsewhere, Australia and Greater China (China, Hong Kong and Taiwan) recorded strong increases, and Russia returned to robust growth.

Exports outside the EU overtook EU shipments in volume terms for the first time, with Asia recording double-digit volume and value increases and renewed growth in Africa, thanks largely to a recovery in Nigeria.
