A bottling plant in France has had to call in 5m recently-made Champagne bottles after discovering a fault.

The bottles were manufactured for Champagne producers at a plant in Reims operated by O-I France, with the defect focused on a fissure. A spokesperson for trade association the Comité Interprofessionel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC), however, has told just-drinks that none of the 5m bottles are likely to get as far as the supply chain.

"All of the bottles have been identified and isolated," the spokesperson said earlier this week.

Solutions for the decanting and transfer of wine in the affected bottles have also been discovered, he added. "Given the significant volume of wine in question, these solutions are going to take some time to complete. We can't say how long it's going to take, probably several months."

The spokesperson said it was impossible to estimate how many of the CIVC's members had been affected, "but, we estimate it is a very small part of our global membership".

"Of those affected," he continued, "the (companies) most at risk would be those low on stocks and who had been counting on the recalled wine to be marketed as quickly as possible after the minimum maturing period.

"We can't say how many firms fall into that category."

The bottles in question would not have been marketed before the middle of next year at the earliest.
