Champagne Gosset has released its latest expression, from its 2002 harvest. Celebris Vintage 2002 Extra Brut comprises 52% Chardonnay and 48% Pinot Noir.

The launch comes almost exactly a year after the Champagne House unveiled its Grand Millésime 2004 expression.

Champagne Gosset is the region's oldest wine house, having been founded in 1584.

Champagne Gosset has now released its latest prestige cuvée, the 2002 Celebris Extra Brut. A blend of 52% Chardonnay and 48% Pinot Noir, the Celebris 2002 sits well alongside the 1988, 1990, 1995 and 1998 Celebris vintages. As usual for Champagne Gosset, the oldest wine house in Champagne, founded in Aÿ in 1584, it was produced without malolactic fermentation.

"2002 was a great vintage, characterised by a cold winter - dry and sunny - followed by a rise in temperatures and rain until mid March." Says Jean-Pierre Mareigner, Cellar Master at Champagne Gosset. "Spring and summer are contrasted and the cool evening temperatures but glorious days during harvest favoured the concentration in sugar, and produced healthy grapes. The resulting wines are straight, tensed, fruity and structured."

On pouring, the Gosset Celebris 2002 Extra Brut shows a pale, radiant and clear gold colour, and on the nose delivers delicate, floral aromas of lilac or violets. It is a subtle wine, which in the mouth has a direct and lively attack, followed by a good length, finally revealing notes of green apple, fresh pineapple and lemon on the finish. With a low dosage, it is a complex wine with great finesse that has been constructed slowly over its decade of cellar time. "It is the wine itself that decides how long it should be matured: we are only here to follow its needs. Not forcing nature - rather, listening to it, is what gives a champagne house like ours its strength," adds Mareigner.

Champagne Gosset Celebris Vintage 2002 Extra Brut will retail for around £135 a bottle and is distributed exclusively in the UK by McKinley Vintners

Global market review of Champagne – forecasts to 2016

Some of the issues and challenges addressed in the previous edition of just-drinks' Champagne report continue to influence a category struggling to grow. Recovery from economic downturn and tumbling sales was evidenced in 2010 and part way through 2011, only to be replaced with a further slow down at the end of that year and continuing into 2012. This has been more prevalent in the western European countries. Elsewhere there has been better sales performance, noteably in the US and Japan, significantly in Australia and not forgetting the burgeoning economies of Asia and Greater China. However, even these new markets can only go part way to offset the situation in the more mature markets, to such an extent that total Champagne shipments are expected to rise only slightly during 2012. According to the report, pronounced growth is unlikely until 2015.|
