The US wine company, The Chalone Wine Group, has acquired a winery in the Rutherford district which is to be the home for Provenance Vineyards, its new Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon label. The winery the company has acquired was formerly known as Chateau Beaucanon.

"We searched a long time to find the right home for Provenance," said Chalone's CEO Tom Selfridge. "Since its focus is Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon, it was important that the winery be in that appellation. So, when we found a winery on Highway 29 in Rutherford, that also includes 45 acres of estate vineyard, we felt it was the perfect fit for us."

The inaugural release of Provenance Vineyards was the 1999 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon which Chalone introduced last December. The 2000 vintage is to be launched in October, while a Merlot and an Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon are also in the pipeline.
