C&C Group saw its branded portfolio hold steady in fiscal-2018

C&C Group has reported its second successive year of sales declines, with fiscal-2018 proving "challenging" in its main markets.

Group sales in the 12 months to the end of February slipped by almost 5% in organic terms, C&C announced earlier today. The top-line decrease follows a fall of 7% in the previous fiscal year.

A redrawing of the company's reporting regions grouped England and Wales with Scotland to make Great Britain, which saw sales increase by just over 2%. C&C's home region of Ireland - which also includes Northern Ireland - posted a sales decline of 5.5%, while International was down 14.6%. In the US, where C&C called time on its distribution tie-up with Pabst Brewing Co last month, volumes tumbled by double digits.

The company said its branded portfolio - comprising the Tennent's lager and Bulmers and Magners brands - was flat in both value (+0.8%) and volume (+0.3%) sales.

"FY2018 was a significant year of progress for the group, both in terms of strategic development as well as improved underlying performance," said CEO Stephen Glancey. "While the trading environment in our key markets of the UK and Ireland remained challenging, our branded portfolio returned to volume and revenue growth.

"In terms of outlook, trading in March and April for C&C Group has been in line with expectations, and we are confident in our outlook."

Glancey also provided further detail on last month's purchase of Matthew Clark and Bibendum PLB from Conviviality Group: "A strategically-important acquisition for C&C, this greatly enhances our route-to-market in the UK on-trade," he said today. "Significant progress has already been made in stabilising the business."
