Sri Lankan beer brand Lion will roll out two variants in Europe through United Breweries' Kingfisher Beer Europe unit

The European arm of United Breweries has partnered with Sri Lanka's Lion Brewery, in which Carlsberg holds a stake, to launch two of its beer brands across Europe.

Kingfisher Beer Europe confirmed earlier today that it will assume distribution and marketing duties for Lion Lager and Lion Stout in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The unit hopes to capitalise on the popularity of Lion, the beer market leader in Sri Lanka, with European tourists returning from the country.

The move represents both new entries into some markets and a change of distributor for others, a spokesperson for the division told just-drinks.

Carlsberg owns a 25% holding in Lion Brewery, whose facility is located just outside Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo.

"We are excited about providing the UK market with another authentic leading Asian beer rich in history and relevance within the discovery world beer segment," said Kingfisher Beer Europe CEO Damon Swarbrick. "We see Lion perfectly complementing Kingfisher in our expanding portfolio."

The two variants will both be available in 33cl cans as well as in 33cl and 62cl bottles.
