Carlsberg has launched a new beer that is a rebrew of a lager first brewed in 1883. Called Carlsberg 1883, the dark lager uses Carlsberg's original 134-year old yeast and is part of the company's ongoing Rebrew Project, which brings historic recipes back to market.

The brewer said the revived beer "respects the past but delivers a contemporary taste that appeals to a modern palette".

"The beer market has changed dramatically in the past few years, let alone since 1883, so it is important that brewers like ourselves demonstrate the quality of our beers and the dedication of our brewers and ultimately help create reasons for beer drinkers to visit the pub," said Liam Newton, VP of marketing for Carlsberg UK.

Carlsberg 1883 is already available in Denmark and the UK and will also be available in other markets "soon", a Carlsberg UK spokesperson told just-drinks.
