Carlsberg already exports Baltika brands to a number of African countries

Carlsberg is to launch its Russian Baltika Breweries brand in the Democratic Republic of Congo, starting with non-alcoholic malt drink Baltika 0 Grain.

The product will initially roll out in DR Congo's capital Kinshasa, with the first exports recently shipped from St Petersburg, Carlsberg said today. DR Congo is the latest African country to receive Baltika brands, which are already available in Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania and Nigeria.

Elena Volgusheva, Balitka's export sales director, said: "Our company is the market leader among Russian beer exporters. We plan to move beyond and to expand our reach annually, introducing people around the world to our best varieties."

Africa accounts for 10% of Baltika's volumes to non-CIS countries. As well as Baltika 0 Grain, Carlsberg exports flagship beer Baltika 7, strong lager Baltika 9, classic lager Baltika 3 and traditional dark beer Baltika 6. Baltika's largest African export market is Tanzania.

DR Congo is the world's 19th most populous country, with 77m inhabitants. Fifteen million live in Kinshasa, and the city is the third largest in Africa.

Last year, Carlsberg confirmed that its Baltika had started exporting to Oman.
