Carlsberg is to stop producing discount soft drinks for the Danish market in two years, the company said today (15 January).

The Danish brewing giant said it would stop production at its Saltum-Neptun site after its contracts with retailers expire at the end of next year.

Carlsberg expects between 30 and 40 jobs to be lost as a result of the move, a spokesman for Carlsberg Denmark said.

"The business has been losing money and we don't see that the situation will change," the spokesman told just-drinks. "We've been mostly making private label products for retailers where there is very, very hard competition."

Danish brewers Royal Unibrew and Harboes are among the key operators in the country's discount soft drinks segment.

The Carlsberg spokesman said the brewer would remain the local bottler of Coca-Cola products.

Sectors: Beer & cider, Soft drinks, Water
