The Danish brewer, Carlsberg, has announced that it is to invest some €30.7m ($30m) in upgrading production facilities at its two recently acquired brewing subsidiaries in Bulgaria.

Carlsberg CEO, Nils Andersen, said that company planned to focus on the development of the acquired Bulgarian operations and would not be buying other breweries or building new production facilities in the near term.

The Danish company acquired a 59.4% stake in Shumensko Pivo in June and followed that in early August with the purchase of a 67% participation in Pirinsko Pivo. Carlsberg said it plans to develop Shumensko Pivo as a premium national brand while reinforcing Pirinsko Pivo in the south western region of Bulgaria. Both breweries are being upgraded to prepare for the production of Carlsberg's flagship brands, Carlsberg and Tuborg, scheduled to begin in summer 2003.
