Carlsberg has dismissed reports that it is set to announce a round of job cuts in Italy - but has refused to rule out a restructuring of its business there in the coming year.

A Carlsberg spokesman labelled as "nonsense" reports today (24 February) that the Danish brewer was to scale back its Italian operations.

However, he refused to guarantee that jobs in Italy were safe from Carlsberg's plans to cut costs across Western Europe this year.

"We're always looking to reduce costs and we'll see further restructuring in Europe this year," he told just-drinks.

Carlsberg's share of the Italian beer market fell in 2005 after it opted to cut distribution of its economy brands, while a price hike on its Splugen label ate into volumes.

The spokesman said Carlsberg had set aside DKK400m (US$63.8m) for restructuring this year but added some of that cash would be spent on the brewer's recent moves to scale back its operations in Denmark and the UK.
