The European Commission has approved the acquisition of joint control by Danish brewer Carlsberg of plant variety breeder and developer Sejet Planteforaedling I/S (Sejet), also of Denmark.

Carlsberg will share ownership of Sejet with Danish agricultural supplies cooperative Dansk Landbrugs Grovvareselskab (DLG).

After a brief competition inquiry into whether the deal would harm choice within the beer and plant development industries, the Commission concluded there were no problems, clearing the deal without conditions.

Brussels noted one of Carlsberg's priorities is "research into optimising each step of beer production", helped by its joint-control of Sejet. The same would apply to its alliance with DLG, which supplies Danish farmers with cereal seed, fertilisers, agricultural lime and crop protection products, improving the efficiency of Carlsberg's ingredient sources.
