Soft drinks fizzing in Chile

Consumption of carbonated soft drinks in Chile rose by 6.4% to 2.3m litres in 2010, according to trade body Asociacion Nacional de Bebidas Refrescantes (Anber).

The increase means carbonated drinks consumption has jumped by 35% in the past decade, to reach 1.33m litres at the end of last year, Anber said.

Strong demand in 2010 was fuelled by the FIFA World Cup, the celebration of Chile's 200 years of independence and strong economic growth, Anber said. Carbonated and soft drinks constitute 80.7% of the market by volume, while juice and nectars account for 8.4%.

On average, carbonated soft drinks consumption has increased by 4% annually in Chile since 2000.
