McClelland's will now be distributed by Campari America

Morrison Bowmore Distillers (MBD) has granted Campari America exclusive US import and distribution rights for its McClelland's Scotch whisky range.

The deal will see the US arm of Italian distiller Gruppo Campari take control of McClelland from previous distributor White Rock Distilleries on Friday (1 June). Campari America already distributes MBD's Bowmore, Auchentoshan and Glen Garioch in the US market.

Gerry Ruvo, Campari America CEO said in a joint statement with MBD: “The addition of the broad McClelland’s portfolio lets us offer even wider choices for our distributors, retailers and consumers, furthering solidifying our position as the premier whisk(e)y supplier in the US."

The statement said McClelland's is the fifth-best-selling single malt in the US and 15th in global sales, according to industry figures.

McClelland's is MBD's second-biggest seller, with worldwide sales tripling between 2001 and 2010, the statement said.

McClelland's has four lines in the US - Highland, Islay, Lowland and Speyside.

MBD head Mike Keiller said: “Our portfolio of single malt Scotch whiskies has shown significant volume and value growth since Campari America took them on in 2008. We are confident that McClelland’s strong growth trajectory will only continue.”

Campari America is the US distributor for whiskies, rums and liqueurs from Suntory and Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua as well as for Gruppo Campari brands. It has held exclusive distribution, import and marketing rights for MBD's Bowmore, Auchentoshan and Glen Garioch since November 2007, when it was still called Skyy Spirits.

The company changed its name to Campari America in January.

Gruppo Campari, which bought Skyy Spirits in 2002, owns about 45 brands that are distributed in 190 countries and claims to be the world's sixth-largest premium spirits company.

MBD is owned by Japan's Suntory Holdings.
