California's Wine Institute has appointed three companies to handle its UK presence

The trade association for California's wine industry has confirmed details of its new UK organisation, following the decision earlier this year to close its dedicated office in the country.

Golden State Wines UK, R&R Teamwork and Spear Communications will handle separate strands of The Wine Institute's presence in the UK, the trade body said today. GSW, headed up by Justin Knock MW and former Treasury Wine Estates general counsel Damien Jackman, will deal with trade representation, R&R will be responsible for public and media relations, while Spear will manage the annual tasting event.

The news comes almost three months after The Wine Institute blamed "severe cuts" to its government funding for its decision to pull its office in the country.

"We are so excited to have this 'dream team' come together to support our category-building efforts in the very important UK market," said VP of international marketing at The Wine Institute, Linsey Gallagher. "We have a strong California Wines brand in the UK with positive trends, and we have ambitious plans to accelerate our sales to the UK in the future."

The organisation said it aims to hit annual sales of US$400m in the UK "by the end of the decade". Last year, the state's sales in the country totalled $284m.
