Cadbury has officially put its Australian soft drinks business up for sale, following a strategic review.

Cadbury announced its intention to sell the soft drinks arm in a trading statement today (16 December), ending months of speculation about the business.

Cadbury's Australian drinks arm has looked increasingly isolated in the business, following the firm's spin-off of its US soft drinks business back in May. One senior analyst told just-drinks this summer that the Australian division "looks like it's on the blocks".

Cadbury said today: "The separation of the integrated beverage and confectionery businesses in Australia is now well advanced and we will update the market on further developments in due course."

Several potential suitors have been touted by analysts and press reports, including Coca-Cola Amatil, the market leader and which was itself recently subject to a takeover offer from fellow Australian group Lion Nathan, owned by Japan's Kirin Holdings.
