The country's Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade said late last week that total export volumes for cachaça in 2013 increased by 13.2% versus 2012, coming in at 9.2m litres. In value terms, exports hit US$16.6m, a rise of 10.7%.

Year-on-year imports to Germany, the largest buyer of Brazilian cachaça, soared by 37.8% to 2.7m litres in 2013. The value of exports to the country jumped by 28.1% to US$2.9m, according to the figures.

Exports to the US, Brazil’s second largest cachaça exporter, fell by 15.7% in value to US$1.9m, with volumes following suit, dropping by 4.7% to 704,008 litres.

In April last year, the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau formally recognised cachaça as a “distinctive product of Brazil” in the country.
