The Jack Daniel's owner said today that Whiting, currently Brown-Forman's chief brands and strategy officer, will oversee the company's regional operations and global production. He starts on 1 October.

Brown-Forman said the COO role has been infrequently filled over the past 30 years, "depending on the company's organisational structure and needs".

The company's previous COO was Mark McCallum, who held the position from 2009 to 2012 when he became president of Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific and Travel Retail. He succeeded James Bareuther, who was COO from 2003 to 2009.

Whiting, 49, has been with Brown-Forman for 21 years and has held a number of roles in the company.

"Through his various assignments and his service on our company's executive leadership team, Lawson has worked across the globe and had exposure and made notable contributions to vital areas of our success, including portfolio strategy and management, annual planning & operating, capital deployment, and corporate responsibility," Brown-Forman CEO Paul Varga said. "He has consistently produced positive results and outcomes for the company and he is very well-prepared to take on these significant new responsibilities."
