Britvic has said it expects the tough trading environment to continue into 2019, as the group hailed a rise in sales in its fiscal-2018.

In results for the 12 months to 1 October, released today, Britvic posted a sales increase of 2.7% to GBP1.5bn (US$1.9bn). In reported terms, the UK-based soft drinks producer's top-line was up 5.1%.

Looking ahead, chief executive Simon Litherland said the political and macroeconomic landscape will remain challenging.

"Britvic has consistently demonstrated that we are a strong, agile business, operating in a resilient category," he said. "In 2019, we have exciting plans for our portfolio of leading brands across our markets. Whilst political and economic uncertainty will undoubtedly continue, we are confident we will continue our long-term track record of growing earnings, dividends and shareholder value."

Britvic "successfully navigated" the introduction in April of the Soft Drinks Industry Levy in the UK, with strength coming from its low/no sugar portfolio. Elsewhere, the company's brand innovation performance was described as being at "an all-time high". The Purdey's owner also said it had "successfully managed" a CO2 shortage in the UK & Ireland, which was flagged in Q3 results.

Elsewhere, France proved tough, with category declines, increased competition and poor weather hitting Britvic's private label sales as well as branded syrups and Fruit Shoot in the country.

Ireland performed well in the 12 months, thanks to Britvic's low and no sugar brands. Meanwhile, in Brazil, the group realised the synergies from its purchase of juice business Bela Ischia Alimentos in early-2017.
