The Brewers of Europe has elected a new president

The Brewers of Europe has appointed the boss of Grupo Damm, Demetrio Carceller, as its new president.

Carceller, executive chairman and and CEO of Damm, takes over from Alberto da Ponte, who steps down after four years in the role. Da Ponte has recently been appointed president of RTP - Rádio e Televisão de Portuga. He was previously the president of Portugal's Associação Portuguesa dos Produtores de Cerveja (APCV).

Carceller said: “Following the example of my predecessor I will strive to ensure that Europe’s brewing sector, with its unique mix of enterprises of all sizes, pursues its dynamic and pro-active participation in the current battles in and for Europe."

Da Ponte said: “I am leaving The Brewers of Europe in the best possible hands. Demetrio Carceller runs one of the main breweries in Spain and has the necessary European vision, optimism and pragmatism to lead The Brewers of Europe throughout the present global economic turmoil."

Last month, the organisation said that a 160% rise in beer tax in France would “strike a death blow to thousands of jobs the sector supports”
