Chilean brewer Austral is planning to begin exports to Europe and the USA in the second half of 2003. The company already exports to Argentina, but the financial collapse in that country has made exports uneconomical. General Manager John Kimber said the company is currently making contact with potential distributors in Europe and the USA. The company is 50%-owned by the Chadwick family, who also own wineries Viña San Pedro and Viña Errázuriz. Austral is hoping to use many of the two wineries’ existing international distributors. The other 50% of the company was purchased in late 2000 by Chilean brewing giant CCU. Since then Austral has dramatically expanded its sales and production. The company’s share of Chile’s premium beer market has risen from 1-2% in 2001 to 15% at present.
