Burwick, a 20-year veteran at PepsiCo's North America unit, will take over from Martin Roper at the helm of Boston Beer in the second quarter, Boston said today. Roper, CEO at Boston for 23 years, announced his retirement last year.

Burwick, a Boston Beer director for the past 12 years, will step in to his new role from US coffee house chain Peet's Coffee, where he has served as CEO & president since 2012. Burwick was also president of North America for Weight Watchers for two years after leaving PepsiCo in 2009. He held a number of roles at the soft drinks giant, most recently the post of chief marketing officer for North America.

Burwick will take over Boston Beer at a challenging time. Volumes have been in decline for the past two years as previously fast growth in the US craft beer market decelerates. Leading craft brewers such as Boston Beer have been hit hardest by the slowdown, with craft-style brands owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev also affected.

In September, analysts at Credit Suisse said there was a "fair probability" Boston Beer would be sold within the next 12 months, with Molson Coors the likeliest suitor.
