Villa, who created the Belgian-style Blue Moon at Molson Coors' US headquarters in Denver and helped build it into an international brand, will leave on 5 January, Molson Coors' US unit, MillerCoors, confirmed today. He is officially retiring from the company to spend time with his family and pursue new endeavours, MillerCoors said.

"While I am stepping away and retiring from MillerCoors," Villa said today, "this company will forever hold a special place in my heart. Over the past 20 years, I have witnessed the growth of Blue Moon from a local beer that we developed at the SandLot to a brand that is sold around the world. The success of Blue Moon has surpassed my wildest dreams."

Villa will not retain any involvement with Blue Moon's unit, Blue Moon Brewing Co. John Legnard will continue as brewmaster at the Blue Moon RiNo Brewery in Denver.
