German brewer Bitburger has reported falling volumes from its mineral water business during 2005.

Bitburger, Germany's largest independent brewer, saw revenues from its Gerolsteiner Brunnen unit fall 2.2% to EUR193.6m (US$231.6m). The fall followed an 8% drop in 2004.

Bitburger said that its mineral water sales had been hit by fierce price competition and rising demand for economy-priced brands, similar trends to those that have weighed on Germany's beer industry.

Volumes fell 3.6% to 6.75m hectolitres but Gerolsteiner Brunnen remained the leader of Germany's mineral water segment with a market share of 9%.

Bitburger did not disclose volume figures for the unit.
