The leading supplier of organic wine to French supermarket outlets, Biovidis, has been sold to French businessman Philippe Gerard. Financial details were not disclosed.

Loire-based Biovidis was set up a decade ago by winemaker Vincent Girault. It markets around 80 wines from 40 producers, representing 500,000 bottles a year. 100,000 bottles are exported, the biggest market by far being the US followed by Germany and the Benelux region.

The purchaser, Philippe Gerard, formerly a manager with the Casino supermarket chain, owns a 10-hectare estate of AOC fronton. In January 2004, he set up Hong-Kong-based firm, Maxi Wines & Spirits Trading Ltd, which specialises in the distribution of French wines.
