The Serbian province of Kosovo, run by the UN, picked provisional buyers for its largest brewery and winery, the Kosovo privatisation authority said yesterday (23 February).

The brewery, located in the western town of Peja, reported sales of EUR11m (US$13.1m) in 2004, Kosovo Trust Agency (KTA) said in a statement. Peja's production capacity is 325,000 hectolitres.

The KTA has insisted on investment of EUR15m in the brewery in the next five years and job guarantees for 612 employees.

The Rahovec winery has production, storage and bottling facilities for red and white wine and some 900 hectares of vineyards.

The KTA would only disclose the level of the successful bids. An offer of EUR11.2m was accepted for the brewery, while EUR5.5m was enough for the winery.

The KTA did not comment on the number of bids it received in the tenders nor would it name the successful bidders.
