The UK wine merchant Bibendum, together with its agency Grands Vins de Gironde (GVG), will is to launch a branded non-vintage Bordeaux wine called Lafayette, in the UK and Europe, which it hopes will appeal to modern tastes.

The wine is a non-vintage claret made from 2001 Merlot, but with some reserve wines added to add extra depth, complexity and structure, the company said. Most of the fruit is sourced from parcels on the Right Bank of the Gironde. All the wine has a minimum of three months bottle aging before release.

The packaging uses as its core an image of the spirit of freedom statue in the Place de Bordeaux,.

Lafayette will be launched in Tesco on July 14th - Bastille Day, the day of the French revolution.
