New UK company BFT Drinks has launched an energy drink caffeinated with a leaf found in the Amazon rainforest.

The product, called Yusa, uses guayusa leaf, which BFT describes as the "second-most caffeinated plant in the world after coffee". Guayusa extract has recently been approved in the UK for use in food and drinks, and according to BFT contains twice as many antioxidants as green tea.

BFT said the stevia-sweetened Yusa "aims to bridge the gap between health and energy drinks" and contains about 2.5g of sugar per 10cl. The drink also include a blend of carbonated water, mango and lemon fruit juices and natural flavours.

BFT founder Andy Bell said: "Yusa, as an energy tea, is bringing a totally new kind of natural, soft drink to the UK market and will appeal to those consumers who are looking for a healthier alternative to traditional energy drinks, whether they're at the gym, at work or on-the-go."
