Ashwell's management career spans more than 30 years, during which he has held senior positions at some of the world's best-known consumer goods companies. His experience in brand management, sales and marketing began at J. Lyons and Spillers, two leading consumer companies in the UK. In 1969, he moved to Japan where he was responsible for the marketing of several leading spirits brands, including Gordon's Gin, Campari, Cointreau, and Remy Martin. Four years later, he became President of Revlon Japan, which at the time was the company's largest subsidiary outside the U.S. From 1976 until 1991, Ashwell worked for Johnson & Johnson International where he served in a number of senior management roles centered in Japan, where he lived for 20 years, and the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand.

Until June, Ashwell was Chairman of Seagram Distillers plc. Other management positions previously held by him include President of Seagram's Chivas Brothers Ltd, Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson UK Ltd, CEO of Waterford Wedgwood UK plc, and Chairman of Wedgwood Group.
