Simon Berry helped launch Berry Bros & Rudd's first website in 1994

The chairman of Berry Bros & Rudd, Simon Berry, is to retire at the end of this year after four decades with the UK wine & spirits group.

Berry, who has been chairman at the company for the past 12 years, will be replaced in December by deputy chairman Lizzy Rudd. "I've always believed that the right time to retire is not when you're ready but when your successors are ready, and that time is now," Berry said.

Representing the seventh generation of his family at the group, Berry drove a number of innovations including in 1994 Berry Bros & Rudd's launch of Travel Retail outlets at Heathrow airport. In the same year, he also launched the company's first website.

Speaking about her future role, incoming chairman Rudd said: "With the support of [CEO] Dan Jago, as well as [creative director] Geordie Willis and my brother [finance transformation director] Edward Rudd, I look forward to chairing the company in this exciting new chapter."

The executive changes come after Berry Bros & Rudd opened a new retail outlet in London to replace the store underneath its head office.
