Sales of beer in France are expected to fall between 5-7% this year, according to the chairman of the French Brewers Association.

Olivier Picot blamed strong competition in the drinks category, anti-drink driving laws and a health-driven move away from alcoholic beverages for the fall.

He added that per person consumption in France may soon be the second lowest in the EU, behind Italy.

In an effort to reverse the trend Picot called for improvements in training for cafe workers and in the quality of the beers they serve.
