Beam Suntory is bucking the trend for the annual Wood Finishing Series from Maker's Mark, lining up two separate expressions in the US for this year.
Kicking off with FAE-01 next month, the pair represent the third year of the line, which comprises cask strength Maker's Mark that has been finished in barrels that contain "proprietary" wood staves. FAE-01 - FAE stands for 'fatty acid esters', organic compounds that come from the staves - uses an American oak stave that has been seared on one side only.
FAE-02 will follow in the Autumn.
"If you've ever walked through a rick house and taken a deep breath, you can almost taste the Bourbon in the air," said Maker's Mark director of innovation Jane Bowie. "That's the experience we've created with FAE-01. It's literally like sipping on angel's share."
Earlier this month, Beam Suntory posted flat sales from the 12 months of 2020. Flagship Bourbon Jim Beam broke the 11m-case barrier for the first time last year.
