The company had announced its intention to build a new facility two years ago. Production started on the site, in Bardstown, Kentucky, earlier this week.

Already, the firm is lining up expansion plans, having hit full capacity of 1.5m proof gallons. As a result, Bardstown Bourbon will add additional equipment to the distillery's existing footprint, which will increase annual capacity to 6m proof gallons.

"The success of our 'Collaborative Distilling Programme' demonstrates the massive demand for custom, authentic, Kentucky whiskey products," said CEO David Mandell. "We're excited to begin producing Bourbon for our customers and our own brands."

The company said it will be able to produce whiskey for new customers by the third quarter of next year.

A month before Bardstown Bourbon's initial announcement, Diageo said it would also build a new distillery in Kentucky, which was scheduled at the time to be up and running by the end of this year.
