Barclays bank is to allow its UK mobile app customers to block transactions made at places that serve alcohol.

The feature, which is aimed at customers dealing with addiction, turns off attempted payments with pubs, bars and supermarkets using a button on the Barclays bank app. The button can also block payments for gambling-related items and premium-rate websites and phone lines.

Barclays said the button will help those struggling with mental health issues, addictions and those who rely on others to handle their finances. However, it also said it will let all customers "take greater control over where their money can be spent".

Martin Lewis, the founder of the MoneySavingExpert website and a founder of the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, welcomed the app.

"I want to applaud Barclays for being the first major bank to sit up, take note and act," Lewis said. "I believe it will make a real difference to people's lives and I hope the other banks will follow suit."

Five retailer categories are covered by the app. They are groceries & supermarkets and restaurants, takeaways, pubs & bars.
