Ball Packaging Europe has restructured its management team resulting in a new president and two additional COO's for the company amidst plans to build an additional factory in Poland.

The European subsidiary of Ball Corp. said yesterday (24 January) that its previous president of metal beverage packaging, Americas, Michael Herdman, will take over from John Hayes as president of Ball Packaging Europe.

Herdman's role will begin with immediate effect, while Hayes, his predecessor, will join previous vice president of manufacturing Gerrit Heske in the duo roles of executive vice president and COO.

Herdman previously worked at Rexam, managing can making operations in Asia and Europe; directing global business development as well as "managing a plastic container division in the US," the company said.

Former president Hayes will continue to report to Ball Packaging chairman, president and CEO R. David Hoover, while Heske will remain in charge of the company's manufacturing operations.

Hoover said: "John has done an outstanding job over the last three years while running our European subsidiary Ball Packaging Europe. That, along with his previous experience at Ball and elsewhere, made him the obvious choice to head our operations. John brings leadership, energy, experience and intellect to this new assignment."

In addition, the company has also announced plans to build a new beverage can manufacturing plant in Poland to meet demand in the Polish, Central and Eastern European markets.

The Lublin-based plant will initially have one production line with an annual capacity of around 750m cans but is set to include additional lines in the future. The company has said that the plant will be completed during the first half of next year.

Herdman added: "The Lublin plant will provide us with geographic coverage across Poland and position us to serve even better our customers there as well as those in countries further to the east.

Ball Packaging Europe has twelve production sites across Germany, France, the UK, the Netherlands, Poland and Serbia.
