Bacardi and Diageo have been weighing the impact of Hurricane Irma, as the storm moves on through the Caribbean, towards Florida.

The category five hurricane reached Puerto Rico, where Bacardi produces its namesake rum, earlier this week. Late yesterday, a spokesperson for the company confirmed to just-drinks that all its employees on the island are safe.

"Our thoughts and well-wishes are with our fellow Puerto Ricans at this trying time," the spokesperson said. "The Puerto Rico facility and Casa Bacardi brand home have not sustained any major damage.

"The main production areas for Bacardi rum look in good shape. Obviously, with a hurricane of such intensity, we have trees down throughout the campus and will begin clean-up in the coming hours."

The storm has also hit the US Virgin Islands, home to Diageo's Captain Morgan rum production. A spokesperson for the company also confirmed the safety of employees, adding: "The worst of the storm passed to the north of St Croix.

"The distillery was well-prepared and an initial assessment of the site suggests we experienced only minimal damage."

The storm is forecast to hit Cuba, where Pernod Ricard produces the Havana Club rum brand, later today.
