French cooperative the Agrial Group has made another foray into the cider category, this time through the acquisition of Aston Manor Cider in the UK.

The co-op, which claims to be France's largest cider producer, confirmed earlier today that it will add Aston Manor to its cider stable, which also includes the Seattle Cider Co in the US. Agrial bought Seattle Cider Co, along with Two Beers Brewing, in late-2016.

When contacted by just-drinks, a spokesperson for Aston Manor declined to divulge the purchase price. Last year, the group posted annual sales of GBP134m (US$174.4m), with exports to around 20 markets beyond the UK.

"Aston Manor have been looking at strategic options and for a partner to continue the growth of the company and in doing so to broaden our offering," said the UK company's chief executive, Gordon Johncox. "With Agrial we have found this partner, a strong group with a well-developed portfolio of products and a well-developed international platform."

Marc Roubaud, MD of Agrial's drinks division, added: "It was crucial for Agrial to assert our global ambitions in the cider market by gaining a foothold in the world's largest cider market, close to our heartland and the orchards of our members."

Today's announcement comes 15 months after Aston Manor confirmed it was considering a sale as an option to generate new investment. At the start of this year, another UK Family-owned cider producer, Aspall Cyder, also sold up, this time to Molson Coors, again for an undisclosed sum

Aston Manor was founded in 1983 and owns brands including Kingstone Press and Frosty Jack's. The family-owned company also produces cider for third-party brands.
