UK cider and apple juice producer Aspall has upped juice production three-fold after investing GBP2.2m (US$3.4m) in a new juice press.

The company said the machine, at its Suffolk production site, will add 3m litres to its juice output by 2018. It will also allow the company to buy more local apples and reach its goal of expanding English apple juice into new markets.

“We are keen to build new relationships with local apple growers buying fruit from them that they might not otherwise be able to sell because it doesn’t meet the supermarket grade,” said Aspall MD Des Smith. “Ultimately, we aim to get more English apple juice on supermarket shelves.”

This week, Anheuser-Busch InBev moved into craft cider in the US, taking majority control of Michigan cider maker Virtue Cider.
