Asahi looks set to buy SABMiller's Grolsch, Meantime and Peroni brands

The brewer, which put the SABMiller-owned brands up for sale last year after it secured the takeover of the UK-headquartered company, said today that Asahi is prepared to pay EUR2.55bn (US$2.87bn) for the "brand families" and associated businesses in Italy, the Netherlands, the UK and internationally. AB InBev's announcement follows reports out of Japan earlier today that Asahi, the country's beer market leader, was set to table a bid.

As well as the three beers, Asahi is set to take control of Miller Brands UK and SAB's sales and marketing office in France.

"We are pleased to have received this binding offer from Asahi on the Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime brands and businesses," said AB InBev CEO Carlos Brito.

SAB CEO Alan Clark added: "SABMiller has grown Peroni and Grolsch into world-renowned premium brands, and we are confident that, along with fast-growing modern craft brewer Meantime, they will continue to thrive and develop. These beers will continue to be part of SABMiller and sold and managed by us until the change of control."

Asahi has been granted a "period of exclusivity" related to the purchase, which, AB InBev flagged, is "conditional on the successful closing of the recommended acquisition of SABMiller by AB InBev".
