Anheuser-Busch InBev is hoping to set a new industry packaging standard with a test of plastic-free six-packs for its Corona beer brand.

The rings, which are made from plant-based biodegradable fibres, are designed to break down into organic material. They will be tested in Mexico at the beginning of 2019, with plans for a wider roll-out later in the year.

Evan Ellman, Corona's 'better world' director, said he recognises the "influence a global brand like Corona can have on the industry", adding that A-B InBev will pursue "scalable solutions like plastic-free six-pack rings that can become a new standard to avoid plastic for good".

The trial is part of the brand's partnership with Parley for the Oceans, a group that works to protect the world's marine and coastal life. In May last year, Corona and Parley announced an alliance and commited to protect 100 islands by 2020.

A-B InBev said Corona is the first global beer brand to trial 100% plastic-free six-pack rings. However, it is not the first to tackle the problem of plastic multi-pack waste. Earlier this year, Carlsberg unveiled a way to package multi-pack can formats without the use of plastic. The Danish brewer said the proposition could reduce global plastic waste by about 1,200 tonnes a year.
