Anheuser-Busch InBev has readied the carve-up with AmBev of SABMiller's South American presence.

The company, which is set to close its US$107bn purchase of SAB later this year, said late last week that its AmBev division will take control of SAB's operations in Panama. AmBev will subsequently transfer its operations in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador to AB InBev, with the latter then absorbing SAB's businesses in the three countries.

In 2005, SAB spent US$7.8bn on acquiring Grupo Empresarial Bavaria, in the biggest transaction in the brewing industry since Interbrew bought AmBev to create InBev in 2004. As well as being Colombia's beer market leader, Bavaria also dominated the markets in Ecuador, Panama and Peru.

Last week's announcement will "allow AB InBev to focus on countries where the SABMiller businesses it acquires are well established, and allow AmBev to initiate operations in Panama through the established SABMiller business and further expand its businesses in Central America", said AB InBev.

AB InBev hopes to complete the takeover of SAB in the second half of this year.
