Anheuser-Busch InBev has confirmed that it will launch a new stonger “dark” version of Budweiser, called Black Crown, early next year.

The “amber" lager, which will be 6% abv, is the result of the brewer's Project 12 run earlier this year.  Twelve of its brewmaster were asked to each come up with a new beer as part of the initiative.

Black Crown, created in Los Angeles and originally known as “Budweiser Batch #91406”, “reigned supreme” in Project 12, according to the company.

But it said the new brew is “born out of the collaboration of all of Budweiser’s 12 brewmasters”.

Rob McCarthy, Budweiser's VP, said: “The beer is an amber lager that is a little darker than Budweiser, but is flavorful and like Bud very drinkable."

He said the group will offer more detail on Black Crown "closer to its launch early next year".

Last month it emerged that A-B InBev had received approval for five new “dark” variants of its brands – including Black Crown – from the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.

In January this year, the brewer released Bud Light Platinum - also 6% - which it says is performing strongly
