Trade association The Distilled Spirits Council said late yesterday that US distilled spirits exports in the period rose 10.6% on the same, prior-year period, coming in at US$698.5m. American whiskeys, including Bourbon, Tennessee whiskey and American rye, grew 6.1% to $464.6m.

Smaller categories also enjoyed growth, with US brandy seeing a near-40% increase, to total $43.45m in the first half. Vodka was up 51% to $33.6m and rum rose almost 50% to $18.55m.

"This clearly demonstrates the growing appeal of US-made spirits, particularly American whiskeys, in many foreign markets," said SVP for international trade Christine LoCascio. "But, other traditionally smaller categories such as brandy, vodka and rum are now showing strength in many highly-competitive markets."

Meanwhile, exports to the UK were up 39% to $64.8m, Germany saw a 33% rise to $55.4m and France lifted 21.4% to $51.8m. The Council also flagged growth in Brazil, Panama and Japan as well as Italy, Poland, Latvia and Chile.

"Around the world, adult consumers are seeking out American spirits because of their diversity of flavours and styles, mixability and authentic heritage," LoCascio added. "As in the domestic market, premiumisation is the backbone of our export strength."
