The purchase, for an undisclosed fee, transfers SPI's ownership of Permalko to Amber Beverage. A spokesperson for the company told just-drinks the purchase gives Amber control of more than 90% of Permalko.

SPI bought a majority stake in Permalko in 2006.

The Permalko distillery, in the Rusian city of Perm, owns a wide range of spirits brands, including vodka, balsam and liqueurs.

"Having the Permalko team on board will make our position considerably stronger in this growing market," said Amber CEO Seymour Ferreira, adding that the takeover will strengthen Amber's growth plans in North America, Russia and other key regions.

Speaking to just-drinks last month, Ferreira said his company is looking to fill gaps in its portfolio, particularly Irish and Scotch whisk(e)y. He also said Amber had held low-level talks with cannabis companies but was not prepared to rush into the emerging cannabis beverage category.
