There are 450 wine wineries and negociants in South Africa, with 44 new wineries, 33 new ranges and at least 513 new wines launched in the past year.

More than 4,000 wines were recorded in the 2003 John Platter South African Wine Guide, which is as comprehensive a list of details provided about wines and wineries in the country.

There are no "official" statistics available on the number of wines produced in the country and with a fairly high portion of wine exported in bulk and sold under labels not available in South Africa it is a difficult task to complete.

The year-to-year figures for South African exports to September showed a marginal decline in the amount of bulk wine exported. Total exports increased to 192m litres from 176m litres last year. Of this, 61m litres of bulk wine was exported last year and only 60m this year.
