Wine production in Austria is set to dip this year, according to recent statistics. Statistik Austria said yesterday (26 September) that production this year will be 8% lower than in 2004, coming in at around 2.53m hectolitres.

While white wine production will fall by 7% to around 1.7m hectolitres, red wine production will also drop, by 9% to 874,400 hectolitres.

The agency cited heavy rains last month, which increased the putrefaction of grapes, as the main cause of the decline.
