Sales of Spanish cava were up slightly last year, according to recent figures. The chairman of the Regulatory Council of Cava, Gustavo Garcia Guillamet, said yesterday (2 March) that sales of the sparkling wine rose by 3.14% in 2004, reaching 221m bottles.
Although sales of Cava over the Christmas period fell last year by 1.3%, domestic sales, which accounted for 45.2% of total sales, increased by 2.3%, Guillamet said. In value terms, sales of Cava in Spain last year reached €434.7m (US$571m).
Cava exports were also up a fraction, by 3.8% to 121.2m bottles in volume and €405m in value.
The European Union was the main export destination, taking 96m bottles. The US imported around 12m bottles last year.
